La Cantine cafe review

A great little cafe, with a menu that won't break the bank

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Erin Moulding, Tignes Reporter Updated

There is a new and exciting café on the Tignes map and you don’t want to miss it!

It's a quirky, contemporary little hangout in the heart of Lavachet, serving fantastic, belly filling, well priced slope side food. Gourmet cheese toasties, hot homemade soup of the day and delicious homemade cakes are the order of the day here.

After a morning on the mountain you’re in need of refuelling so what’s better than a hot cheese toastie with a big bowl of home-made soup to dunk it in, while warming your toes in a cosy café?

La Cantine offers this and so much more. From the moment you walk in you are greeted with smiles and a warm hello from the staff. With it only opening this season, the décor is very up to date and everything is brand new, which instantly gives the place a modern and trendy feel while still being very homely.

They offer a small menu with something for everyone that is constantly changing and keeps you coming back for more. They offer a new special toastie each day and their soup changes daily too and is always homemade. Just what you want when the snow is falling outside.

As a regular at La Cantine I have tried nearly all their delicious food and I have never been disappointed, which just makes my decision on what to have even harder. I opted for the special of the day of beef chilli with guacamole and of course, lots of cheese! You have the option of making your toastie ito a meal, adding coleslaw and chips for just a small amount more, which is a silly question in my eyes. Who doesn’t love coleslaw!?

They also have a selection of hot and cold drinks, with a proper coffee machine for those coffee fans. There is also the option of beer or even prosecco for those of you who might be needing a little Dutch courage to hit the black runs.

Once you have ordered at the counter inside why not take a seat outside in the sun while you wait for your food, enjoy the mountain view and people watch as the world goes by.

The service is very quick and friendly and the staff are always on hand to help you with whatever you may need. When the food arrives at your table, it’s exactly what you’ve been hoping for, with cheese oozing out of the edges and the plate almost overflowing.

I would say La Cantine is the perfect place to go if you don’t want a heavy (expensive) mountain lunch but still want to be close by to the slopes, have a warm filling meal and warm yourself up. The staff are fantastic, the food is some of the best, the atmosphere is homely yet modern and best of all it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to eat there!
