Heatwave alert
by Robin Deering | Skinets Administration | published 8-Jul-2010
An official heat wave alert has been issued for the Rhone Alps area from midday day today through to Saturday.
With clears skies and a drop in winds, temperatures are expected to reach 35°C and hotter still in some towns at the bottom of the valley. Fortunately up at higher altitudes we won't be seeing such high temperatures but needless to say precautions should be made to avoid any sunburn or heat stroke.
Météo France has issued this alert for the area and advise staying out of the sun in peak hours 12.00-15.00, this will greatly reduce sunburn and heat fatigue risks. If you are out hiking or doing any physical activities, sun cream (higher factors are advised in the Alps), sunglasses and water are a must.
The rest of France is not on heatwave alert, but temperatures are warming up and different departments have begun taking precautions to prepare emergency services and ensure access to air-conditioned buildings. Lower speed limits are often put in place on roads during peak hours to reduce high levels of pollution.
