Lucky Escape Yesterday After a Fall in a Crevasse in Tignes

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Tignes Editor Updated

Alarm calls went out yesterday afternoon as a number of people spotted a rope leading into a crevasse where a man had fallen, near the top of the Grande Motte glacier in Tignes.

Thankfully the two men were roped together, as a snow bridge collapsed under the first man, leading him to fall in with his companion desperately digging in to try to avoid following him. The lead man was left dangling on the rope in the crevasse until he was rescued.

A local mountain guide was nearby with a group and quickly went over to help, as did two lift company employees. Weather conditions were also good, another stroke of luck, so that the rescue services could locate the men quickly and bring them back to safety.

The second of the two sustained a broken thumb, which considering their predicament, could have been a lot worse! There was apparently a big round of applause when the two men were rescued.
