At about 13:30 yesterday an avalanche was triggered by a small group of British holidaymakers and their guide, which led to a major rescue by the local PGHM and avalanche dog teams.

The group are believed to have set off the avalanche whilst ski touring, and the ensuing slide then engulfed two more people further down the mountain.

A slab around 150m across travelled around 400m down the mountain which buried the two other people.

Thankfully the rescue teams managed to find and recover everyone involved. Some of the injured were taken to hospital in Bourg St Maurice for treatment whilst others suffered minor injuries which did not need further treatment.

The map above shows the general location the avalanche happened, thought to have been on the North face of the Fogliettaz.

The avalanche risk for the area has remained on high since weekend rain, fresh snow and wind may have loaded some slopes unfavourably.
