Video Snow Report from Tignes : Sun 19th Jul 2009 - Freeride MTB Tour - Stage 2, Tignes

This is stage two of the five stages that takes the riders in this Freeride MTB (Mountain Bike) Tour all over the Rhone-Alpes and Pyrénes.
As long as riders make the marked gates the rest of the mountain is theirs and the aim of the game is to be the fastest top to bottom.
The five races which made up the Tignes stage, kicked of in a brief moment of appauling weather but the participants were not deterred. Afterall, a bit of rain or snow just means a bit more mud to wash off later!
Day 2 was hot and sunny meaning that the special route down to Lac de Chevril, with helicopter airlift out not only ran but was a huge success.
Despite the risky business of filming from some of the most challenging spots on the course here is some great footage to give you some idea of what these guys can do.

The Freeride World Tour stop in Tignes will finally get underway today. The competition, which has been delayed several times due to bad weather and too much snow, will take place today on the Grand Balme face in Tignes starting at 9am. Organisers have moved from the North face of the Pramecou after heavy snowfalls and bad weather made the Grand Balme a better option. Videos from Tignes - European Beach Soccer Championships in Tignes

Beach soccer is a game that has evolved from the shore lines of Brazil. A fast, flamboyant and skilful sport, it is a diversification of “the world’s most popular game” that the Cantona brothers, Eric and Joel, imported to France in 1997. Watching the players on the field it soon becomes obvious that this is different to conventional football:
* The pitch is considerably smaller, 37m by 23m
* The ball is lighter and softer
* Each match is split into three twelve minute periods
* The teams are five-a-side with rolling subs
* The players wear no shoes or boots
* All free kicks are direct with no walls allowed
* England qualified!!
As Cantona says “The tactics are particular to the sport and the physical effort involved is huge. It is much harder to accelerate in the sand and the players need to make acrobatic movements at any time. A good beach player excels equally well with the ball at his feet as he does in the air – “Effective and spectacular at the same time.”
