Two skiers were killed in an avalanche today in Tignes. The pair - a mountain professional and his client - were skiing off piste when the avalanche occurred at 11:30 this morning.

The 80-100m wide avalanche was triggered at 2,100m in the wooded off piste area of Bois de la Laye - a well known hiking route in the summer. The alarm was quickly raised but it was only upon the discovery of two airbags at the foot of the avalanche that the rescue team realised that people may be buried in the slide. The two skiers were carried more than 300 meters by the slide and their bodies were discovered buried deep under the snow at around 14:00.

Following the recent high winds, the avalanche risk on Wednesday was Level 3 - considerable.

Our thoughts go out to the victims' families and friends.
