Tignes Activities - Summer

Summer Activities in Tignes
The majority of things to do in Tignes relate to being outdoors, and whilst there are many organised activities, getting out there is mainly what it is about - at a leisurely pace or at warp speed, it's up to you. The list of activities available in the summer is endless and there is always something to suit everyone; whether it be families with small children, seasoned hikers, thrill-seekers or simply those who want to get away from it all and try something new.
Archery & Shooting
Archery & Shooting

The Stade du Lagnon in Val Claret has an archery course that is open from early June through until late August. Time on the targets is bought by the arrow - 10 arrows are €2.60 and 100 €17.50. Age restrictions apply and strict safety regulations must be observed but it’s definitely a fun way to practice your Robin of Sherwood skills in a tranquil alpine setting. Beginners can learn ‘tir l’arc’ from scratch and those with more experience can put their skills to the test with a variety of courses

Canyoning
Canyoning
A not-so-gentle but extremely refreshing summer activity is one way to describe canyoning! Plunge yourself into the mountain streams via a series of abseil descents, jumps and natural water slides – just make sure you choose a warm day! You will make your way along rivers and rapids, using the river bed as a natural obstacle course.

Not suitable for very young children, but anyone over the age of about 8 can take the (very cold) plunge and try canyoning. With the safety of a guide everyone can abseil down cascades, splash into pools and ride the river rapids. You can choose from short beginners’ routes or longer ones for the more adventurous.

Hydrospeed is an alternative to rafting where you shoot down the river on a kind of inflatable body-board. Half-in half-out of the water you are closer to the action and guaranteed a soaking!

Different companies will have their own policies on age limits but usually, unless they are booked onto a children's activity course, anyone under the age of about 14 years old will have to be accompanied by an adult. A basic level of swimming ability is required for safety reasons.

There are a number of local companies that offer guided descents down the local waterways including FranceRaft, Evoulution 2, Chlorophyll and the Bureau des Guides at prices from €55.

Children's Clubs - Summer

The scope for summer activities in the Alps is endless, so you will find that at most Children's Clubs in Tignes the focus is very much on getting outdoors and making the most of the sunshine and the mountains. Summer clubs are a great way for children to meet new friends and discover new experiences.

  • The Evolution 2 Junior Academy offers a wide range of adventurous outdoor pursuits such as rafting, climbing and mountain biking.
  • For younger children Les Marmottons Childrens Village in Val Claret takes 3-8 year olds for fun and games in the sun!
  • Tignes Kids Club has two groups, 6-8 year olds and 9-11 year olds. Meet at the Kids Club Chalet (Chalet Club Jeunes) next to Le Lagon in le Lac at 9:15 am and 1:45 pm for a whole host of sports and fun activities. A one week package costs in the region of €130 or 10 half days from €155.
  • The Tignes Youth Club (Le Club Ados), for 12 to 16 year olds offers a multitude of activities including via ferrata, adventure park, mountain biking, white water rafting and quad biking from just €155 for a week package. The qualified instructors will ensure your kids have a fun packed time in the Alps. Meeting point is the Youth Club Chalet (Chalet Club Aods) situated next to Le Lagon in Le Lac.
  • For the really small members of the family head over to the Mamottons Park in Le Lac next to the skate park where the giant inflatables will give the little ones hours of bouncing fun! Fun in the sun for ages 3-8 years.

Tignes information will be able to give you all the details you need for the above clubs on 00 33 (0)4 79 40 04 40.  Outside of the organised clubs Tignes also organises many extra entertainments during the summer months ranging from kids shows in the amphitheatre next to Le Lagon swimming pool, to clowns, musicians and face painting all around the resort. These events are not usually scheduled until the preceding weeks but you can find out about them from the notice boards around resort, listening to Tignes radio, or keeping an eye on our ‘What’s On Guide’.

Fishing
Fishing
Tignes is a veritable angler’s haven with 7 mountain lakes in the region. The most obvious of which are Lac Tignes which has been home to world cup fishing competitions in recent years and Lac de Chevril, the reservoir lake created by the Tignes dam. They are all open for recreational fishing and are well stocked, mainly with different varieties of trout.

Licences and local fishing tax stamps can be bought from La Maison de Tignes le Lac and from the fishing warden. Special prices are available for children under 13 years. Remember to enquire about local fishing regulations at the time of purchase including restricted areas, necessary size of fish for keeping and opening dates for fishing in all the lakes.

Glacier Walking
Glacier Walking
For a truly unique experience, clamp on your crampons and go hiking on one of the Espace Killy’s Grand Motte or Pissaillas glaciers. The breathtaking views and spectacular crevasses make this an incredible adventure. There are a number of glacial hikes, of varying difficulty, in this region of the Alps. Most mountain guiding companies will run organised excursions to the most accessible.

From around €40 for adults and €20 for children you can discover the Grand Motte Glacier with a guide, who will show you the glacier and the surrounding landscapes. You will also visit the Grotte du Glace (Ice Grotto) and have lunch at Le Panoramic restaurant at a height of 3032m. For an extra €4 you can join the optional downhill walk into Val Claret, a vertical drop of 932m. This walk is available to all ages but can be a bit tough on the legs! These excursions are organised for 3 to 4 times a month so check with the Tourist Office or the STGM lift company for details of the exact dates.

Grotte de Glace (Ice Caves)
Grotte de Glace (Ice Caves)

Deep in the heart of the Grande Motte glacier, at 3500m of altitude, an ice marvel has been created.  The Tignes ice caves are a magical grotto of glistening sculptures and fairytale figures. 200 meters of passageway have been dug out of the Grande Motte glacier and each winter expert ice sculptors arrive to create a new exhibition based on a different theme such as dragons, crystals, animals and so on.

At 3000m the caves are accessible in both summer and winter via the Téléphérique de la Grande Motte or the funicular (underground train); entry costs just €4 plus your lift pass. Remember to wrap up warm, even if it is sunny outside!

Hiking & Walking
Edelweiss
Edelweiss

Located at the entrance of the Vanoise National Park, Tignes is the perfect place to start easy walks or outings of several days in the mountains. On the pathways, you will find yellow 'indication signs' that show you your position, the altitude, the approximate walking time left and the direction to follow. You can also buy a good hiking guide called "Les Sentiers de l’Ete" from the Tourist Office, which presents more than 20 itineraries throughout the Espace Killy Area. The guide consists of separate pull out sheets for the individual walks which contain an aerial map of the route, a vertical climb chart, the distance and time of the walk and other information about the flora, fauna and extra points of interest on the walk.

A favourite trail in resort is the Botanical Walk that heads from Le Lavachet down towards the waterfall in the direction of Lac du Chevril. Along this 2 hour walk all the local plants are labelled with French, English and Latin names so you can familiarise yourself with the local flora. Ever wondered what Edelweiss really looks like or from which plant the local liqueur Genepy is made from? Well, here’s your chance to find out!

In addition to these walks that are all marked by yellow sign posts, there are two GR routes that traverse the Tignes area. GR stands for ‘Grande Randonée’ and these routes are just two of hundreds that traverse France, encompassing some of the most spectacular countryside and views. To make the most of the higher trails you can save your legs and buy a Pedestrian Lift Pass and let the lifts whisk you up (and down) to the most spectacular views at a higher elevation.

Paragliding ('Parapente')

Glide down to the bottom of the valley on a tandem paraglider controlled by the instructor. He manoeuvres the parachute while the passenger enjoys the ride and fantastic views. Taking off is the only scary moment: once you have been equipped with a helmet and strapped to the instructor behind you in a rather intimate way, both of you simply point your skis (or board) downhill, and carry on getting faster and faster until the parachute lifts you into the air. One then peacefully glides above the pistes for ten to twenty minutes, aiming to catch thermals to keep you up for longer. Landing is very gentle and no more of an impact than jumping off a step. Also available in summer, the take off and landing are just as easy and the views just as stunning! ... see "Tignes for Paragliding" for more

Via Ferrata
Via Ferrata

If climbing up sheer rock on the end of a piece of rope sounds a bit scary then Via Ferrata climbing offers an element of security that still allows beginners to enjoy the achievement of having scaled a mountain! This form of climbing was invented by Italian soldiers in the Dolomites who used it to enable them to scale vertiginous faces easily and quickly. These days it is a popular sport that makes the thrill of mountain climbing more accessible to children, beginners and those who want a bit more security when they climb.

Following marked routes through the mountains you are helped along by steps, bridges and ladders whilst being roped up for extra safety. Suitable for adults and children over the age of 8; guides can be arranged on request.

There are quite a few Via Ferrata routes in the Espace Killy most of them being found nearer to Val d’Isère. The three main companies offering Via Ferrata guides in Tignes will arrange transport to the most appropriate of these as part of the service. Prices for a day’s worth of guided Via Ferrata can be anything from €50 upwards although juniors are less. The Bureau des Guides, Chlorophyll and Evolution 2 all offer Via Ferrata expeditions as part of their summer catalogue.

Acroland and the Base Nautique can be found on the edge of the lake in Tignes Le Lac. From here you can practice your “Big Air” skills on the graded ski jumps that deposit you in the lake itself on landing. You can take out a peddalo for half an hour from €7.50, a canoe / kayak from just €5 for half an hour and even try your hand at dingy sailing. Sailing lessons are available or for those already with some sailing experience, you can opt to be accompanied rather than taught instead.

As with most of the activities in resort, the SporTignes Multi-Activity Card will get you in for free!

White Water Rafting
White Water Rafting
If you haven't experienced this before then this is a definite 'must try' on your list of activities to do! Tignes has a number of trained guides who will let you experience some of the best white water rafting available in the Alps. From the middle of May until September, the mountain rivers flow furiously as they are fed from the melt waters running off the glaciers high above the town. There are various options available from a 3 hour adrenaline rush to a full days excursion - this activity is guaranteed not to disappoint.

Hydrospeed is an alternative to rafting where you shoot down the river on a kind of inflatable body-board. Half-in half-out of the water you are closer to the action and guaranteed a soaking!

A whole host of companies within the Isere valley offer these activities but up in Tignes you can choose from Bureau des Guides, Chlorophyll, Evolution 2, Rafting Eaux Vives and Snocool. Prices are anything from €45 upwards although there are deals for big groups. The prices include the guide, wetsuit & helmet hire (glacial snowmelt can be a bit chilly if you’re not properly protected) and transport to and from the river. Remember that all the rafting points are from Bourg Saint Maurice onwards so you may have to get down the valley if transport is not included in your package.
